Hands up, I am just an arbitrary reader and this list of my best reads from 2012 is just a fun little end of the year post. Just to be clear, these are books I've read this year, but some of them were published earlier than 2012. But it's my list, so I make the rules.
Best Novel: Tell The Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt
I've read many novels this year, but this is one that really stayed with me. I didn't ever review it as such, but I wrote about its effect on me post-masters degree. It's a beautiful book about love, loss, and friendship, set in 1980s New York.
Best Ebook: Controller by Sally Ashton
Undoubtedly one of the few books this year that gave me a genuine 'wow' moment, as I say in my review. The writing is visceral, and the narrator gets inside your head. It's erotic, serious fiction.
Best Short Story Collection: The White Road and Other Stories by Tania Hershman
Ok, so I don't read that many short story collections, but this was truly exceptional (you can read my review by clicking the link above). I still have to get around to reading Tania's latest book.
Best Non-Fiction: Dear Zari: Hidden Stories from Women of Afghanistan by Zarghuna Kargar
Aside from this making for interesting research for my own writing project, this collection of real-life stories from Afghan women gave me a lot of food for thought, and made me very grateful for the life I have.
Best Poetry Collection: Absence has a weight of its own by Daniel Sluman
Talking of 'wow' moments, Daniel's debut poetry collection knocked me sideways. It's an extremely accomplished collection that explores loss, illness, sex, and love, which I have yet to review on here.
